Tolerance and fit test

Find your printer’s ideal clearance: a plate with holes from tight to loose, each numbered, and two pins at the exact size.

The number above each hole is the gap per side, in mm. Keep the first hole where the pin slides in without forcing.

How it works

  1. Pick the shape and size of your pins or shafts.
  2. Set the gap range to test (for example 0.05 to 0.40 mm).
  3. Print the plate and pins, then try each hole.

FAQ

What clearance should I use for parts that fit together?

Often 0.10–0.20 mm per side in PLA on a well-tuned printer. This test gives the exact value for your machine and filament.

Why test round, square and hexagonal?

Round holes often come out smaller than designed; square and hexagonal shapes stop rotation. Test the shape you will use.

How do I use the result?

Enter the gap you found in the “Clearance” field of the SplitSTL splitter: every dowel in your splits will be the right size.
