About SplitSTL
A tool to print big with a small printer, and a toolbox for makers. Made in Vienna, Austria.
Who runs SplitSTL
SplitSTL is built and run by Martin Buessler, a sole proprietorship based in Vienna, Austria. Full company details are in the legal notice.
It started from a simple observation: most 3D printers sold today have a 180 to 260 mm build plate, while the projects people want to make (helmets, statues, props, scenery) are much bigger. Cutting a model by hand in a slicer takes time and rarely gives parts that are easy to assemble.
What happens to your files
- Preview in your browser: the split is computed on your computer. Your model is only uploaded when you export.
- Free tools: the viewer, converter, lithophane maker, 3D text, photo relief and calculators run entirely in your browser, with no upload.
- Exports and GPU tools: files are processed on our server in Vienna (NVIDIA graphics card), then deleted automatically: after 48 hours without payment, 14 days after payment.
- Your files are never used to train an AI model and never sold.
How SplitSTL makes a living
No ads, no selling your data: SplitSTL lives on its subscribers. The basic tools are free, exports can be paid one at a time, and the SplitSTL Pro subscription unlocks everything with no commitment. Payments go through Stripe; we never see your card number. See pricing.
Software and models we use
SplitSTL is built on software and models whose licences allow commercial use. Under open licences:
- Splitting and booleans: manifold-3d (Apache 2.0); 3D display: three.js (MIT).
- Image to 3D and figurines: Microsoft TRELLIS.2 (MIT), U²-Net background removal through rembg (Apache 2.0 / MIT). Our server only generates geometry; AMS colours are read straight from the generated volume.
- Photo relief: Depth Anything V2 Small (Apache 2.0), run in your browser.
- Fonts of the text tools: Archivo Black, Bebas Neue, Black Ops One, Pacifico, Lobster (SIL Open Font License).
Under use licences with conditions:
- TRELLIS.2 image encoder: Meta’s DINOv3, under Meta’s own licence. Commercial use is granted, with conditions: indemnifying Meta, complying with export controls, no military use.
- Text to 3D: Stable Diffusion XL (Stability AI, CreativeML OpenRAIL++-M licence) for the starting image. Its use restrictions are part of our terms of sale.
