How to split an STL in 2026: the options compared

You can cut an oversized model with your slicer, desktop software, a free web tool, AI or a freelancer. Here is a factual overview based on each tool’s own site on 8 October 2026.

The options at a glance

Prices and features change, so check each site before deciding. SplitSTL is our own tool; we have tried to describe the others fairly.

Desktop software: LuBan 3D and Split3r

Both install on your computer, so they work offline and keep files local. LuBan 3D is the broadest toolbox here, with modes beyond plain splitting, sold as a subscription or a lifetime licence. Split3r is a one-time perpetual licence and adds 3D labels to parts.

Better choice when you split models every week, work offline or prefer a licence you own.

Free web tools and your slicer

3D Splitter and PartFit 3D process files locally in the browser. 3D Splitter cuts with wavy joints that interlock; PartFit 3D checks whether a model fits your printer.

Your slicer’s cut tool (PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer) adds plugs, dowels or dovetails, but one cut at a time: fine for two or three parts, tedious for twenty. Our guides cover Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer.

Better choice when you need a single cut, or only want to know whether a model fits.

AI splitting and human help

3D AI Studio (Hitem3D) splits a model semantically, along natural parts such as the head or limbs, with snap joints, and is paid in credits. Freelancers, for example on Fiverr, prepare files by hand at a per-project price.

Better choice when a figure must be cut along its anatomy (AI), or you want a complex one-off job done for you (freelancer).

Where SplitSTL fits

The SplitSTL editor runs in the browser with nothing to install. It imports STL, OBJ, 3MF and GLB, picks the smallest grid of cuts for your printer, and lets you move each cut plane or use smart cuts that shift toward thinner sections. Joints get separate pins, integrated pegs or magnet pockets, and part numbers are engraved. The ZIP holds one STL per part, 3MF plates, an illustrated assembly guide and a filament estimate. GPU repair rebuilds broken meshes (free account), and a new Pro mode cuts at natural joints such as the neck, arms or base.

The preview is computed in your browser and the first export is free, so you can compare results on your own model.

Which one to pick

  • One or two cuts: your slicer.
  • Offline work or a licence you own: desktop software such as Split3r or LuBan 3D.
  • Just checking the fit, or free wavy joints: PartFit 3D or 3D Splitter.
  • Figures cut along their anatomy: AI semantic splitting, or SplitSTL’s natural-joint mode.
  • Many parts with connectors, nothing to install: SplitSTL.
  • A complex one-off job to hand over: a freelancer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I split an STL for free?

Yes. Your slicer’s cut tool, 3D Splitter and PartFit 3D are free, and so are SplitSTL’s preview and first export.

Do I have to upload my model?

Not with a slicer, desktop software, 3D Splitter or PartFit 3D. SplitSTL computes the preview in your browser and only sends the file when you export or use GPU repair.

Are these prices current?

They come from each tool’s site on 8 October 2026. Prices and features change often, so check the tool’s own site.

Is SplitSTL better than my slicer’s cut tool?

Not for a single cut: the slicer is quicker. SplitSTL is built for many parts at once, with connectors, part numbers, plates and an assembly guide generated together.
